Cogeneration also known as Combined heat and power (CHP), or distributed generation (DG), is the simultaneous production of electricity and useful heat. Compared to conventional power generation system where electricity and heat are produced from separate sources, CHP systems increase energy security by producing energy at the point of use, and significantly improve energy efficiency.

Trigeneration also known as Combined cooling heat and power (CCHP) is an extension of cogeneration which involves the simultaneous production of electricity, heating and cooling. 
CHP/CCHP systems offer economic, environmental and reliability-related advantages. There are also additional benefits for industry including increased reliability, power quality, and higher productivity. The electric power industry and its customers can also benefit CHP/CCHP capacity is used to support and optimize the overall power grid.

- Economic benefits:

the capital costs for the CHP system, operating and maintained costs and energy costs projected out over the expected  life of the equipment are far lower for CHP systems thanwhere a facility continues to purchase all its power from the grid and gas for heating & water heating from the gas utility.

- Energy benefits:

a typical CHP system can reduce energy requirements by 40 percent compared to separate production of heat and power.

- Environmental benefits:

by increasing energy efficiency, CHP significantly reduces emissions footprint of pollutants such as NOx and SO2 , and other greenhouse gases such as CO2 

- Ancillary benefits:

In some countries, CHP and other on-site generation options can offer grid support to the local distribution utility, including:
- Voltage and frequency support to enhance reliability and power quality
- Avoidance or deferral of high cost, long lead time T&D upgrades
- Bulk power risk management
- Reduced line losses, reactive power control
- Outage cost savings
- Reduced central station generating reserve requirements
- Transmission capacity release
